Thank you for the memory prod.
While stationed in Germany in mid 70s, soldiers would tie together a pair of their combat boots and snag them into the trees outside the barracks as a sign that they were "2 digit midgets," meaning they would be "back in the world," returned to the USA in less than 100 days.
